Fail Harder.

I saw part of the documentary 'Art & Copy' recently and was particularly struck by this mural in ad agency Wieden + Kennedy's Portland office:

The installation is the result of a team of 12 artists, 10000 push pins and 351 hours. I love the white-on-white design and all that order/organisation? Be still my process-loving heart!

The idea behind 'Fail Harder' is to go hard at whatever you are trying, don't go gently for the fear of failure. Don't just fail a little bit. Fail spectacularly. Embrace failure as a result of trying your hardest in the first place.

The film then went on to show a Nike commercial starring Michael Jordan, in which he says:

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot…and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

What do you think?

Hi Rachel,

What a great post. I an totally agreeing with you on this one. A lot of people fear of failure and later regret of not trying. Life is being too short not to try or do what we love.

Thanks for sharing Rachel

So glad the blog is back Rachel. It's a great idea and one that most people sadly don't embrace. I always feel that in life, you have to learn from your mistakes- and use up as many thumbtacks from the stationary cupboard as you can for art purposes.
